WHAT IS SMART HOME AUTOMATION?

Smart home automation is a way of connecting different technologies throughout your home so they can be controlled from a common system and, more importantly, work together.

Most modern homes already contain many “smart” products. You may have a smart thermostat, video doorbell, streaming devices, wireless speakers, security cameras, smart lighting, motorized shades, televisions and other connected devices. When each product operates independently, however, you can end up with a different app, remote or control method for every system.

A professionally designed home automation system takes a different approach. Instead of simply adding more smart devices, it creates a central control platform that brings compatible systems together. Lighting, audio, video, climate, shades, cameras, door locks and other technologies can then be controlled through a consistent interface using wall-mounted touchscreens, handheld remotes, keypads, phones and tablets.

AUTOMATION IS MORE THAN REMOTE CONTROL

There is an important difference between controlling something remotely and actually automating your home.

Using an app to turn off a light from your phone is remote control. Automation allows the home to perform actions automatically based on a command, schedule, sensor, time of day or activity.

For example, selecting a “Good Night” scene could turn off televisions and music, switch off most of the home's lights, leave selected pathway lights on at a low level, lower motorized shades, adjust the temperature and lock compatible exterior doors—all from a single command.

A “Watch TV” command could turn on the television and audio system, select the correct source, adjust the room lighting and give you the controls you need on one remote. You don't need to know which input the television uses, which input the receiver requires or which device needs to turn on first. The automation system handles those steps for you.

THE GOAL IS SIMPLICITY

Good home automation should make technology less complicated, not more complicated.

The homeowner shouldn't need to understand how all of the equipment behind the scenes communicates. The system should present simple choices such as Watch TV, Listen to Music, Good Night, Away, Entertain or All Off and then coordinate the necessary equipment automatically.

It can also provide different levels of control depending on where you are. A wall keypad might provide quick access to commonly used lighting scenes.
